Thomas
W. Budd is a Partner with Clifton Budd & DeMaria, LLP. His main
area of practice is in labor law, primarily dealing with union
negotiations, union avoidance and other related matters. Although
he is experienced in all areas of labor and employment law,
his primary focus, since he began practicing law, has been in
traditional labor matters. Over the years, he has negotiated
hundreds of collective bargaining agreements in such diverse
industries as cosmetics, printing, health care, beverage distribution,
oil and chemical and many others. He has tried numerous cases
before the National Labor Relations Board, some of which involved
significant legal issues decided by the Appellate courts.
As a founding partner of the firm, Mr. Budd began practice as a labor and employment attorney with the law firm of Buell Clifton & Turner. After several years, he and Henry Clifton, Jr. started the law firm that is now known as Clifton Budd & DeMaria. Throughout Mr. Budd’s extensive career, he garnered a strong reputation for his skill in his labor practices. He has overseen many circuit court cases of significance such as cases related to NLRB imposed bargaining orders, the bargaining obligation of Joint Employers, whether concerted activity is protected and the enforcement of pre-recognition agreements. Mr. Budd has argued cases before the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Tenth, and DC circuits as well as handling the negotiation of hundreds of labor contracts.
Mr. Budd received both his Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts degree
from Washington & Lee University, where he served on the Alumni
Board. Outside of his work with Clifton Budd & DeMaria, LLP,
he has enjoyed success in his published works, co-authoring
“Labor and Employment Aspects of Bankruptcy Reorganization,”
in the Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice. In addition,
he has been a guest lecturer for the American Management Association
and other Employer Groups. Mr. Budd has also been recognized
in Whos Who in American Law, Whos Who in America
and Whos Who in The World.
Mr. Budd is a member of the American Bar Association,
the New York State Bar Association, and the Suffolk County Bar
Association in the Labor and Employment Law Section. He was
admitted to practice in the State of New York and the State
of Virginia, and also the Supreme Court of the United States.
Additionally, Mr. Budd is admitted in the First, Second, Third,
Fourth, Fifth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal and the District
of Columbia Court of Appeals.
